Who Are We?
The DEFCON 201 (or DC201) Group is a gathering point for folks
interested in the
alternate applications of modern technology, referred to properly as
Our mission is to help you learn new things, meet new people, mentor
others in areas you may be strong in,
and provide some cohesion within the hacker culture and it's members in
the general New Jersey area.
Do I have to be a "Hacker" to Attend?
Our DC201 SIG(Special Interest Group) meetings are designed to attract
not only hackers but members of various
technology communities and people who want to learn more about Hacking
but do not consider themselves hackers.
The purpose here is to interact with people who may have different
backgrounds but share the same passion for technology.
Do I Have To Be 1337 to Attend?
The DEFCON 201 SIG meetings are open to anyone, regardless of their
skill, age, job, gender, etc.
What are the Rules during DEFCON 201 Meetings?
"Don't Be A Jerk"
"Be open to learning new skills or perfecting/teaching old ones"
"Be willing to either start a project or help someone with their own."
What Separates DC201 From Other Tech Meet Ups?
DEFCON 201 lives in harmony with other hacker, maker and tech
organizations in the New Jersey/New York Tri-State Area.
In fact, two of our founders are long time regulars at the NYC 2600
group. We welcome those from said groups to check
us out as our goals is to be an active, hands-on project-building group
whose members bring in idea
that we help create them into reality.
What Does DC201 Quantifies as a "Project"?
A Project is anything that uses a constructive (or destructive) skill to
build something over time.
This can be something in physical meat space such as circuit building,
radio frequencies, clothing creation,
robotics and physical locks to virtual/conceptual pieces such as
NetOps, InfoSec, virtualization, Red/Blue Team Drills, Data Mining and
In short, as long as you have an idea that you want to create into a
realistic tangible result,
please bring it and our members will try to bring it to fruition with
the tools and resources
of the fine folks at MakerBar!
Can I attend if I only want to meet people?
We understand if people feel overwhelmed by the idea of working on
projects. If you want to show up to socialize,
you are more than welcome to but to get the full experience of our group
you can use your social skills to help out with
projects and DC201. NEVER think that you are useless, everyone has a
skill in something and if you want to learn new ones, we are more than
happy to teach you. We are also looking into pure social gatherings in
the near future and host short talks on various STEM subjects.
What Date and Time is DEFCON 201?
DC201 is located at the amazing MakerBar in Hoboken, New
Jersey. We always meet during the
third weekend of every month. Dates change depending on the organizers
so please check our websites, social media and MakerBar for the exact
We always constantly meet from 7pm to 10pm, though depending on the
situation it may go past 10pm.
DEFCON 201 also supports other tech events in the NY-NJ area and if you
are from other parts of New Jersey,
USA or the world you are more than welcome to attend.
